“Escape Plan” is a 2013 American action thriller film starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film follows Stallone’s character Ray Breslin, a structural engineer who is incarcerated in the world’s most secret and secure prison, aided in his escape by fellow inmate Emil Rottmayer. It is the embodiment of modern action-thriller movies employing a high budget, visual effects, and sound effects.
Personally, as “Escape Plan” was beginning, I thought that the plot would be a cliche prison-break. However, as the movie progressed, the plot became more complex, as new characters were being introduced. Not only is the plot becoming more and more complex as the movie progresses, but also it is filled with plot-twists that shake up the story. For an example, the main character, played by Sylvester Stallone, is shown as a convict within a prison. He breaks out after an array of tactical maneuvering, and thus afterwards, he is presented as a part of an organization that deals with the incarceration methods of confinement establishments. As a viewer, this outcome can not possibly be predicted, hence, our belief of the obvious is purposely being increased only to be later corrected with the actual truth of the plot.
All explosions, gunshots, and maneuvers are done with high-quality special editing. The SFX in the movie are quite advanced, which make them more realistic. Unlike older movies like “The Birds” (discussed in the previous post in this blog), the effects are not easily noticeable. We, as viewers, are quite certain that the explosions are visual effects, but we are amazed at how realistic they have been made. However, the special effects are initiated by action scenes within the movie, and they serve a great role driving the movie to the end.
Personally, the movie was astounding, hence, the realism portrayed in it with the special effects is quite amazing. I was forced by my friends into watching this movie, thinking that it would be a cliche prison-break, but afterwards, I stood corrected with the popcorn bowl in my hands. In my opinion, one of the many pull factors that are persuading and convincing viewers to watch this movie is the duo-casting of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone, hence, both of these actors are quite famous for leading roles in several high-quality films.
